illi Jewelry Care

Tarnishing is a chemical change in the surface of a metal that darkens its color over time.

The gold illi uses will NOT tarnish.

We use 18kt and higher purity golds. Golds of this purity level will not change color because they have more pure gold and less other added metals compared to lower karat gold jewelry. The metal additives are usually silver, copper, or palladium. They are added to make different colored golds (rose, grey and white golds) or make the jewelry piece harder or softer. Lower purity gold jewelry (16kt golds and lower) will tarnish due to the large amounts of silver and copper added to them.

At illi, because we value our promise of crafting long-lasting jewelry that stores beauty and value, we only use 18kt and higher purity golds. This means that you will not worry about learning how to use polishing chemicals and anti-tarnish treatments!

Do I need to clean illi jewelry?

No! Gold of the purity level illi uses will keep its shine and brilliance without any cleaning. Some jewelry aficionados love to clean their gold jewelry every couple of years. If you are one of them, then cleaning your illi jewelry does not get any simpler than the following:

  1. Immerse the pieces in warm water mixed with dishwashing soap (a teaspoon amount or less of dishwashing soap is enough) for 5 to 10 minutes
  2. Brush the pieces gently with a soft toothbrush. Do not use harsh or abrasive brushes since the jewelry is delicate and such surfaces may cause scratches)
  3. Dry the pieces gently with a cotton cloth or a paper towel

Is there anything else I need to know?

Avoid exposing your illi jewelry to chlorine. While pure gold can withstand abrasive chemicals, alloys mixed with gold cannot. Given the higher purity level of illi pieces relative to other fine jewelry, damage by exposure to chlorine may happen if such exposure is frequent. Since chlorine is used in swimming pools, bleaching agents, and even tap water, we recommend that you remove your illi pieces before you go swimming or wash the dishes for optimal keep of your jewelry.
